Background of the study
Historical slave trade routes in Badagry have left behind numerous unrecorded skeletal remains that provide critical insights into the region’s turbulent past. Forensic anthropology can play a pivotal role in documenting and analyzing these remains, thereby reconstructing historical narratives and informing cultural heritage preservation (Oluwole, 2023). Techniques such as isotopic analysis, osteological profiling, and digital imaging are increasingly used to determine the origins, health, and life conditions of individuals affected by the slave trade (Bello, 2024). However, challenges persist in accessing remote burial sites, preserving fragile remains, and overcoming political and cultural sensitivities (Adesina, 2025). This study investigates the application of forensic anthropology to document skeletal remains along historical slave trade routes in Badagry. By combining scientific analysis with historical research, the study aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the slave trade’s demographic and cultural impact, thus contributing to both academic scholarship and community remembrance.

Statement of the problem
Documenting skeletal remains from historical slave trade routes in Badagry is hindered by the degradation of remains, limited access to advanced forensic technologies, and socio-political sensitivities surrounding the legacy of slavery (Oluwole, 2023; Bello, 2024). These challenges result in incomplete historical records and loss of valuable cultural heritage (Adesina, 2025). This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating current forensic methodologies and proposing improvements to ensure more accurate documentation and interpretation of these remains.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess current forensic methods used in documenting historical skeletal remains.

  • To identify challenges in the preservation and analysis of remains from slave trade routes.

  • To propose strategies for enhancing the documentation and interpretation process.

Research questions:

  • What forensic techniques are currently applied to historical skeletal remains in Badagry?

  • What are the key challenges in accessing and preserving these remains?

  • How can forensic methodologies be improved to better document this heritage?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic imaging increases documentation accuracy of historical remains.

  • H2: Environmental degradation significantly impairs forensic analysis.

  • H3: Integrated historical and forensic approaches improve interpretive outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it combines forensic anthropology with historical research to document skeletal remains from slave trade routes. The findings will enrich our understanding of regional history, support cultural heritage preservation, and provide valuable insights for educational and policy initiatives. Enhanced documentation will contribute to a more accurate historical record and promote communal healing.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Slave Trade Routes: Historical paths used for the transportation of enslaved people.

  • Skeletal Remains: Human bones used for forensic and historical analysis.

  • Isotopic Analysis: A technique to determine geographic and dietary origins through chemical signatures.
